Exciting Finale to Hampshire Ladies Grand Prix
Team Southampton won the inaugural Hampshire Volleyball Grand Prix at Bay House School, Gosport despite drawing with local rivals South Hants (Purbrook) and Forza Solent (Romsey).
Team Southampton entered the final series of matches with a two point advantage from the previous three rounds of the Grand Prix and although Forza Solent won three of their four matches on the final day, they could only draw with Southampton in the final match of the competition. South Hants drew two of their final four matches, leaving them in third place overall.
Hampshire chairman, Ashley Cullen, commented that the competition had been an excellent insight into the volleyball talent in the region with New Forest and Wessex (Poole) also competing.
‘The Grand Prix was designed to enable teams who play at local league the chance to assess whether they want to compete at national league level. This is an excellent development opportunity. It further provides both coaches and players the environment to play multiple matches at each event and they can work on different combinations and individual lessons learned. Bay House School is an excellent facility and the Grand Prix allows two matches to be played simultaneously providing spectators the opportunity to witness an excellent standard.’
Each coach nominated their own team player of the season. Team captain, Lana Attwood won on behalf of South Hants; Helen Snaith picked up the award for Forza Solent; Team Southampton recognised Kri Muller; likewise, Wessex and New Forest awarded MVPs to Leonie Cluett and Mille Martin respectively. Team Southampton coach, Julia Thompson won the overall Most Valuable Player, as voted by the Hampshire Volleyball Association, for her excellent attitude and great technique.
Finally, Ashley added ‘we hope this will encourage more teams to enter next season and beyond, to provide a springboard for developing volleyball generally in this country’.

Junior Volleyball Sessions
Calling all teachers, coaches, clubs and junior volleyball players!
The first HVA-led junior volleyball session took place on 28 January and those that took part had a great time and got to play a lot of volleyball with each one demonstrating good progress over the four hour session. There are two further sessions planned on:
- Saturday 25th February; and
- Saturday 25th March
They will take place at The Bay Hub, Bay House School, Gomer Lane, Gosport PO12 2QP between 3pm and 7pm. The cost is just £5 per player.
Anyone who is interested must be aged between 11 and 18 years and needs to have basic skills and understanding of the sport. These sessions are not for complete beginners – sorry!
WHY SHOULD PLAYERS ATTEND?

- Meet other juniors who play volleyball
- It’s fun

- To watch/support their child in developing his/her skills
- If they would like a quiet few hours to catch up on work/emails etc. there is plenty of quiet space to sit quietly and get on (an opportunity taken by one parent last week)

Junior Training Camp –
On Tuesday 20th December 2016, a group of 26 junior volleyball players from around the region gathered together at Ballard School in the New Forest. Under the expert guidance of head coach Clayton Lucas a team of coaches supported the players through three hours of skills practice and games. The players paid £5 each for the session which was donated to the local food bank to help families in need at Christmas. It was a great chance for the players to meet players from other cubs and make new friends. A brilliant time was had by all, with plenty of hard work, learning and fun. Hopefully these sessions will be repeated in 2017 as we continue to promote the best sport in the world! Pictures of the event can be seen in the gallery here
