2018/2019 HVA Grand Prix entries now open –
Hampshire Volleyball Association are now accepting entries in the 2018-2019 HVA Grand Prix Series. As in previous seasons, we are running both a men’s and a ladies competition, with all matches being held at The Bay House School in Gosport. Below you will find information on the format, the cost, changes to SEVA qualification and on funding for attending referee courses.
In previous years we have run the GP series as a big league, but with the increased number of teams entered last year, it became difficult to have all of the teams present at the final event. This is something we want to get back to, so the teams get to celebrate the culmination of the league. We are investigating whether we can run a league followed by some sort of “finals” event. The eventual format is dependent on the number of teams that enter this season, so we aren’t committing to anything yet, but rest assured that our aim remains to provide all teams with as much quality court time as we can. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about the GP series.
We have booked the following initial dates at The Bay House School, working around the majority of the competition dates that Volleyball England have published so far. Once teams are entered, we will work with you to arrange the fixtures to suit everyone as best we can. We have not yet assigned dates to the man’s and ladies’ series as this will also depend on the number of teams entered.

For the first two years at Bay House we have been given a fantastic rate for hall hire, but they are putting up their prices in the new year. They have not yet told us my how much though. Our current stance is that teams should budget for £250 per team entry. If we find that the venue costs are lower than expected then we will reduce the entry fee accordingly.
One of the changes for this season is the rules on qualification for the SEVA finals. We have decided that the teams qualifying for SEVA are the two highest place teams from a club based in Hampshire. This was discussed at the HVA AGM on 24th July, and the committee decided that as the teams were representing Hampshire at the SEVA finals, they should be teams from Hampshire.
We are not placing any restrictions on who can compete in the HVA Grand Prix series, and we love having teams from the surrounding counties and the Channel Islands; it is just the SEVA qualification that is changing. Final positions in the league will still stand – if you win the league then you get the winners trophy.
Designated Referee Requirement
Teams that were entered last year will know that a new requirement for this season is to have a designated referee for each team (see the email from HVA on 30th August). This is part of our drive to improve the standard of play in the GP series. Consequentially, when teams enter, we are asking for the name of the team’s designated referee. This should be one or more people that are expected to take part in all of the team’s refereeing duties across the season, and should be someone with at least Grade 4 refereeing qualification.
To support this stance, HVA will refund the entry fee on a grade 4 refereeing course for one person per team that is entered into the Grand Prix series. You can find courses at http://www.volleyballengland.org/courses and courses of interest are:
– Ashcombe on 8th September
– Bath on 14th October
League Entry and Entry Deadline
To enter the league, please send an email to email@example.com with the following information:
- Your team name
- The team contact
- The team/club treasurer
- The team’s designated referee
The deadline for entry is Sunday 16th September 2018.
Mixed GP events!
Last season, we ran the first Mixed GP event, which saw 9 teams play 36 matches in a single day. This was a great success, and we are hoping to run similar events across the season. Some of you may have noticed that we have 13 dates booked at Bay House, and the plan is to use any dates not assigned to the men’s & ladies’ leagues for some mixed competitions. The plan is to keep each one as a stand-alone event. Watch out for more news soon!
